Halfway through 2023, gastro cases in city surpass 2022 numbers

Updated on Jun 17, 2023 12:48 AM IST

Mumbai has surpassed last year's number of gastroenteritis cases with 6,677 reported cases so far in 2023. The civic health department has advised against consuming street food to prevent the disease, which is primarily attributed to unhygienic food and water supply. Doctors have also seen a rise in leptospirosis cases and attribute the increase to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions being lifted, leading to more outdoor activities and negligence towards hygienic practices. The BMC has issued an advisory cautioning citizens to avoid wading in stagnant rainwaters to prevent leptospirosis.

Slums eat into Andheri RTO ground; finger pointed at BMC

Slum dwellers have partly encroached on the Andheri regional transport office's driving test ground, causing problems for officials. The encroachment has also put plans to develop proper test tracks on the site in jeopardy. RTO officials claim complaints to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have failed to remove the encroachers. However, residents blame the RTO for not doing enough to remove the encroachers and say the ground has become a dump with garbage piling up alongside rusted vehicles. The ground measures almost four acres, with the RTO building to the east and a slum pocket to the west.
